The Four Goals of the Wokini Initiative are to:

1. Improve American Indian and Indigenous student enrollment and success by providing effective support in all aspects of the university experience, including, but not limited to, enhancing student leadership opportunities, increasing cultural programming that empowers all students to lead campuswide activities and promoting peer-to-peer cultural exchange.
2. Transform SDSU to create a welcoming environment for American Indian and Indigenous students by increasing SDSU’s staff/faculty knowledge and understanding of Oceti Sakowin (Lakota/Dakota/Nakota) history, culture, language and contemporary issues through training, professional development and other learning and networking opportunities.
3. Strengthen university partnerships with tribal communities and peoples, cultural organizations and local communities in the northern plains region and beyond, through trusting and respectful relationships, outreach, strategic networks and ongoing effective communication.
4. Expand cultural understanding through Oceti Sakowin cultural understanding workshops for all incoming and continuing students focusing on Lakota/Dakota/Nakota history, culture, language and contemporary issues to foster a sense of belonging for all students.
