Application Time Slot and Room Selection Windows
Your application completion timeframe determines the room selection window you are placed in:
- Apply within 0-24 hours of your time slot being open → First selection window
- Apply within 24-72 hours of your time slot being open → Second selection window
- Apply within 72-336 hours (two weeks) of your time slot being open → Third selection window
- Apply after 2 weeks of your time slot being open → No selection time slot; manually assigned
Room Selection Windows are as follows:
- Selection window 1: Feb. 17-20, 2026
- Selection window 2: Feb. 25, 2026
- Selection window 3: March 5, 2026
- Selection window 4: Manually assigned
Roommate Group Verification Timeline and Process
- Feb. 11 – Roommate group verification opens at 3 p.m.
What Happens when I verify my Roommate Group?
- The roommate group leader must verify the roommate group.
- This ensures all individuals in the roommate group have a completed and active application.
- Once the group is verified, all members of the group will be issued the earliest time slot from all members of the roommate group.
- For example, in a two-person roommate group, if person A has the earliest time slot, once the roommate group is verified, person B will also have that time slot which will override a previously assigned time slot for a later date/time.
- Once a roommate group is verified, any group member will be able to complete the room selection process at their designated time — not just the roommate group leader. As all students have the same time slot, the person who is not in class/at work can be the one that completes the room selection.
Living-Learning Communities
- Application deadline: Feb. 3, 2026, at 5 p.m.
Reassignment Requests
- April 7-May 8, 2026
- Students can utilize the reassignment request process in the housing application beginning April 7, 2026, at 10 a.m. until May 8, 2026, at 5 p.m. No students will be reassigned after May 8, 2026.
- June 2-July 14, 2026
- Students can utilize the reassignment request process in the housing application beginning June 2, 2026, at 10 a.m. until July 14, 2026, at 5 p.m. No students will be reassigned after July 14, 2026.
What are the confirmation windows for?
Students will be able to self-assign to a hall and room during the self-selection windows. The confirmation window helps our system generate a random self-selection window based on the application completion time frame.
What is a self-selection window for?
Students who complete the application within a confirmation window will be randomly assigned a selection time slot to self-select their hall and room. This is all completed in the application during the self-selection window assigned to the student. Verified roommate groups will be assigned the same selection time slot, which will be determined from the best slot within the group.
What do I need in order to complete my housing application?
You will need your login information for MyState, the means to pay the $75 confirmation fee and be ready to sign a housing contract. If you have a roommate in mind, you need their first and last name in order to request them in the application.
What information can I put in the application?
Students will be able to request special accommodations, indicate additional interests, indicate interest in a Living-Learning ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, apply for up to two Living-Learning Communities, create a profile for a roommate search (about me information, living environment preferences, etc.) and search for, request and confirm roommates.
Do I have to choose a roommate?
No, not necessarily. However, if you do not choose a roommate, you will not be able to self-assign during your self-assign selection window. Housing and Residential Life will assign you a roommate at the end of your self-assign window.
Is there a limit to how many roommates I can have?
You can send up to four roommate requests. To fill a double room, you need to confirm at least one roommate. To fill a four-person suite, you need to confirm at least three roommates. If you wish to live in a suite, you must confirm all the roommates you wish to have in the suite with you. This is the only way to self-assign to a suite. Students must have enough roommates to fill a suite when the self-selection window becomes available or they will not be able to self-assign to that space.
Why isn't my friend showing up in my roommate search?
It is possible that your friend has not yet completed a housing application. Your friend also needs to select being included in roommate search results in their application. Only roommates who are eligible to live in the same spaces will show up in search results (a first-year student will not show up in a second-year student's search results, etc.).
What happens if my roommate and I have different self-selection times?
Once a roommate group is verified, the selection time slot that is earliest out of all group members will be issued everyone within the group. Roommates will have the same time slot once their group is verified.
Why can't I access the self-selection step right away?
You must have been assigned a selection time in order to access this step. When your self-selection time arrives, assign yourself to a room.
What happens if I receive a server error message?
Like most online systems, the software has user capacity limits for how many people can access it at any given moment. As soon as one student logs off or leaves the site, another student will be able to access the portal. If you receive a "server is busy" message, please return in a few minutes.
What if I need to cancel my application because I decided not to return to SDSU?
Here is our cancellation policy:
- If your application is canceled on or before May 31, your $75 confirmation fee will be refunded to you.
- If your application is canceled between June 1 and July 31, your $75 confirmation fee will be forfeited.
- If you are formally withdrawing from ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ and your application is canceled on or after Aug. 1 (fall) on or after Dec. 1 (spring) through the date of 60% completion of the current semester, your $75 confirmation fee is forfeited, and you will be billed for any days you had occupancy of your room.
- If you remain a student at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, but are permitted to cancel your housing contract through appeal or release on or after Aug. 1 (fall) or after Dec. 1 (spring) through the date of 60% completion of the current semester, your $75 confirmation fee is forfeited, you will be charged a $200 early termination fee, and you will be billed for any days you had occupancy of your room.
- If your application is canceled after the 60% completion date, you will be charged the entire semester housing charges.
How will my application time slot be assigned?
All on-campus students will receive a randomized personalized time slot via email. Time slots are distributed across multiple days to balance system usage and reduce technical failures.
Does my assigned application time slot affect my room selection time slot?
Yes. Your application completion time frame determines the room selection window you are placed in:
- Apply within 0-24 hours → First selection window
- Apply within 24-72 hours → Second selection window
- Apply within 72-336 hours (two weeks) → Third selection window
- Apply after two weeks → No selection time slot; manually assigned
What if I cannot apply right at my application time slot?
You have 24 hours to be included in the first selection window. There is no advantage to applying exactly at your time slot as it simply marks when your 24-hour period begins.
Can I switch my application time slot?
No. Time slots are assigned to evenly distribute students and prevent system overload. However, because your application window lasts 24 hours, most schedules will accommodate completion.
What if my roommate group has different application time slots?
That is okay. Each person applies during their own application window. Later, once your roommate group is verified, you will be assigned the same room selection time slot.
How do roommate groups work under the new system?
- You can form and verify your roommate group in the housing portal.
- Once verified, all members share the same room selection time slot.
- The group member with the most flexible schedule during the selection window can do the room selection for your entire group.
- No one needs to leave class or share passwords.
Do I get a better room if I apply earlier in the day?
No. The only factor is which application window you apply within. There is no benefit to competing within the same window.
What if I miss both my time slot and the full two-week application window?
Students who do not apply within two weeks of their assigned time slot will be manually assigned a room and will not receive a selection time slot.
What if I am abroad, off-campus or have a time zone conflict?
Because your application window lasts 24 hours, most students can complete the application regardless of location. If you still have concerns, contact the Housing Office in advance.
I'm anxious about not getting the room I want. What can I do?
- Apply within the first 24 hours of your application time slot.
- Form your roommate group early.
- Have a list of backup buildings/room types.
- Attend returner open house sessions or ask your community adviser for help.
What happens if a roommate drops out late in the process?
If your roommate group is unverified, your group can adjust or remove members as needed. If your roommate group is verified and you need to adjust your group members because a group member is no longer attending SDSU, you will need to contact Housing and Residential Life at 605-688-5148 for assistance.
Will this affect my housing contract or rates?
No, this change only affects application timing and room selection.
Will there be single rooms available during self-selection?
Yes, there are single rooms available for selection, but these are limited. If you do not see a single room during your self-selection time slot, these are full.
Are time slots truly random?
Yes. Students are randomly assigned an application time slot. Yes, students are randomly assigned a selection time slot within their confirmation window. Time slots are generated randomly through our housing software.
