DIVA Jazz Orchestra, Boston Pops on Tour to perform at SDSU
In a cultural moment that would typically require travel to Chicago, New York or Boston, two internationally celebrated ensembles will take the stage in Brookings — just minutes from home for regional audiences.
On Friday, Feb. 27, the acclaimed DIVA Jazz Orchestra brings “Tappin’ Thru Life” to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center at Ӱ. Then, on Sunday, March 1, the world-renowned Boston Pops on Tour, under the baton of Keith Lockhart, will perform the music of “Star Wars” on the same stage in a sweeping symphonic celebration spanning the entire film saga.
Both performances will offer audiences the rare opportunity to experience artists of global stature less than an hour’s drive from communities across eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota.
DIVA Jazz Orchestra – Tappin’ Thru Life
Founded more than three decades ago, the DIVA Jazz Orchestra is widely recognized as the premier all-female big band in the world. Its production “Tappin’ Thru Life” is a vibrant tribute to the legendary Maurice Hines, blending swinging big band arrangements with dazzling tap dance and dynamic vocal performances.
Featuring two professional tap dancers, John and Leo Manzari, and two vocalists, Ann Hampton Callaway and Clint Holmes, performing alongside the orchestra, the evening is both a celebration of American jazz heritage and a contemporary showcase of artistry at the highest level.
Boston Pops on Tour – The Music of Star Wars
Under the direction of Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops on Tour will perform music from across the entire “Star Wars” saga. To experience these iconic themes in their original cinematic context would require nearly 20 hours of film viewing. In one unforgettable evening, audiences will hear the full sweep of John Williams’ legendary score performed live by one of the most celebrated orchestras in the world.
The Boston Pops’ appearance in Brookings represents a rare touring engagement of an ensemble typically heard in the nation’s major cultural centers.
A milestone for SDSU, region
These performances are made possible under the headline of Woodbine Productions and through the generosity of an anonymous donor who began the series 19 years ago. The investment by this benefactor has resulted in a partnership where every dollar of every ticket sold becomes music scholarships at SDSU, and the amount raised has now surpassed $1 million. It is an investment that continues to elevate both the educational experience of students and cultural life in the region.
“What may feel familiar to our community is truly extraordinary,” said David Reynolds, director of the SDSU School of Performing Arts. “Bringing ensembles of this caliber to Brookings — and doing so in a way that directly supports our students — is something rarely seen anywhere in the country.”
