Heiberger named dean of Fishback Honors College

Longtime 蜜桃影像 administrator and faculty member Greg Heiberger has been named dean of the Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College following a national search.

Heiberger will assume the permanent role Feb. 22 after having filled the post on an interim basis since last May. He previously served as associate dean of academics and student success in SDSU鈥檚 College of Natural Sciences and is a tenured associate professor in the Department of Biology and Microbiology.

Heiberger has proven himself to be a strong and collaborative leader throughout his time at 蜜桃影像,鈥 said Dennis Hedge, provost and vice president for academic affairs. 鈥淕reg鈥檚 commitment to innovation, interdisciplinary connections and expansion of student opportunities will be pivotal during this next exciting era of the Fishback Honors College.鈥

Heiberger has a bachelor鈥檚 degree in mathematics and a master鈥檚 degree in counseling and human resource development with a student affairs specialization, both from SDSU. He earned his Ph.D. in education and human resource studies with a university leadership specialization from Colorado State University.

Heiberger鈥檚 more than 20 years of leadership in higher education includes innovation in curriculum, research and outreach programming. He spent five years in student affairs and 10 years as pre-med advisor/instructor. Since 2017, he had served as coordinator of the accelerated master鈥檚 in human biology, and in 2020 he was appointed associate dean of the College of Natural Sciences.

鈥淚 am so humbled to be chosen as the next leader of the Fishback Honors College, and I look forward to continuing to work with students, faculty, administrators, alumni and friends as we forge a successful future in honors together,鈥 Heiberger said.

Heiberger鈥檚 recent research projects include a social listening study exploring the change in STEM career sentiment throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and he was the principal investigator for a National Science Foundation-funded project titled "The Wokini Undergraduate Biology Education Network."

鈥℉e regularly led study abroad programs and oversaw the Student Success Team, academic programs and curriculum within the College of Natural Sciences.

Heiberger was a founding member of the LeadState program, mentored numerous honors independent studies, has been recognized regularly by students at the Fishback Honors College medallion ceremony, has been nominated for the Fishback Honors College Teacher of the Year, and advised hundreds of honors students.
