Under the baton of Maestro Delta David Gier, a chamber-sized orchestra will bring to life Dmitri Shostakovich’s famously bold and experimental score — music that is rhythmically daring, sharply satirical and vividly expressive. Shostakovich’s writing for “New Babylon” is considered one of the most innovative film scores of the early 20th century, weaving cabaret, marches and biting musical caricature into an electrifying sound world that dramatically enhances the visual storytelling.

In addition, New York-based cultural historian Joseph Horowitz will be in attendance. Horowitz will offer introductory insight into the film’s historical context, its artistic significance and the extraordinary collaboration between cinema and live music that audiences will witness.

This unique convergence of film, music and history promises an unforgettable evening and a fitting grand finale to the SDSU Chamber Music Series.
