Deep Water
Captured by Joseph G. Hutton, this photo depicts life eight years before the Meridian Bridge that connected South Dakota to Nebraska at Yankton was built.
For this week's Throwback Thursday, take a look at how ferries were used in South Dakota. In a prairie and semiarid state, one would not expect to see many ferries. However, these boats proved very important to ford goods from one side of rivers to the other. In this case, the ferry moves people, a buggy and a wagon of hay across the Missouri River. The ferry crosses near Yankton in 1916. Ferries, for many years, crossed the deep water, helping people and goods move, even in a drier state like South Dakota.
