School House
Platted in 1879 by the Winona and St. Peter Railroad, the quaint village of Kranzburg, SD calls Codington County home. This week’s Throwback Thursday celebrates The District No. 5 one-room public school in Kranzburg. This is the first rural public school in Codington County. In June 1879, the community decided to build a school with the goal of keeping costs under $1,000.00. The public school opened in December of that year. Enrollment included 29 students registered with an average attendance of about 14. C.E. South taught the first the first term (December 1879-March 1880) for a salary of $30.00 per month. Terms revolved around weather and farmwork. Around the turn of the century, a parochial school developed in Kranzburg, which took some of the students. However, the District No. 5 Public School survived until June 1969. Today, the school building still exists as a historical landmark, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
