Conferences, Contests and Outreach – School of English and Interdisciplinary Studies
Through outreach, partnerships and public programming, the School of English and Interdisciplinary Studies builds lasting relationships with communities across South Dakota. These efforts support local schools, enrich cultural life and prepare graduates to contribute to education, writing and civic life throughout the region.
ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ and Regional Engagement
We maintain a strong presence in Brookings and across South Dakota through teaching, outreach and cultural programming. Faculty members regularly contribute to community and professional organizations and participate in public events that promote literature, writing and cultural understanding.
Faculty and students support several public programs throughout the year. These events bring writers, scholars and community members together to explore literature, culture and global perspectives.
Through literature, film and interdisciplinary study, students gain exposure to different cultures and perspectives, preparing them to participate in our global society.
Partnerships with PreK–12 Schools
The school maintains strong partnerships with local and regional schools to support future teachers and expand educational opportunities.
Key initiatives include:
- Student teaching placements in middle and high schools across the region
- Training in current English teaching methods for future educators
- Dual-credit course offerings with Brookings High School
- Statewide writing contests for middle and high school students
These partnerships strengthen collaboration between university faculty, local educators and SDSU graduates who remain in the region to teach.
Creative writing faculty also host the Jerome Norgren Poetry Contest and the Paul Witherington Creative Writing Contest, both open to middle and high school students across South Dakota.
Published quarterly by Johns Hopkins University Press, Victorian Periodicals Review is the only peer-reviewed journal that focuses exclusively on the history of Victorian periodicals.
