English Career Opportunities

Graduates of the School of English and Interdisciplinary Studies meet state, regional and national workforce needs while gaining versatile professional skills. The program prepares K–12 English and language arts teachers — an area of growing demand — and equips students with strong writing, communication and critical-thinking abilities valued across many fields.

About half of English majors pursue English education or combine the major with another discipline such as psychology, sociology, economics, political science, prelaw, modern languages, journalism, communication studies or theatre, increasing their career flexibility.

Graduates pursue careers in teaching, business and industry or continue to graduate study. Many earn M.A. and Ph.D. degrees and serve as faculty members at universities across the United States.

Students also gain practical experience through internships and apprenticeships, where they may work in roles such as technical writing and can often secure full-time employment after graduation.
