writing on paper
SDSU Writing Center

Location: Hilton M. Briggs Library 103

Students: All university enrolled students (undergraduate/graduate)

Hours: Spring 2026 Hours

Consultations

Students can chat about an essay for a composition or history class, a research paper, abstracts for a human development or sociology paper or a job or graduate school application letter — in short, any type of writing that they have concerns about. Consultations take place during any stage of the writing process from determining the ideas, focus and framework to citing sources and figuring out how semicolons work to polishing the style.

Staff

The Writing Center staff is comprised of English instructors and trained graduate/undergraduate students. They are experienced in working with students of all backgrounds, including second-language learners.

Our tutors are not editors. They will not simply proofread a student's writing.

Each session is devoted to an active and engaged learning experience in which the tutor and the student work together to improve writing.

Spring 2026 Services and Hours

Our individual tutoring hours are based on tutors' availability with priority given to appointments scheduled in advance, though walk-ins will be accommodated according to availability. Holiday hours may vary.

Faculty Services
  • Traveling Tutor

    • Faculty may request traveling tutors visit a class to assist in engaged writing activities such as research days, citation practice or flipped classroom days in which students are spending their class time actively writing. A traveling tutor can offer another set of hands to engage with students in the writing process creating more opportunities for students to receive immediate advice and benefit from intellectual engagement with others.
    • Request a Traveling Tutor

      • Faculty may email Amber Jensen with their requested date, time and topic for the class session. Requests will be fulfilled as staffing and scheduling allow on a first come, first served basis.
      • Faculty should keep in mind that tutors will not take over or teach the class but rather assist faculty by moving throughout the room to monitor work, answer questions and make themselves available for questions by engaging students in discussion of their work.
  • Class-specific Write-ins

Appointments

To help as many students with their writing as possible, we respectfully request that students limit their appointments to no more than two per week (including both scheduled appointments and walk-ins).

During busier times of the semester, we may request that students limit themselves to one appointment per week.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this.
